The Avon High School Winterguard was formed in the fall of 2004. The Winterguard program is very beneficial to the guard members,
the fall colorguard participants in our “Mighty Eagle” Marching Band. The girls learn to work as a team, gain confidence and pride,
and develop lifelong friendships! The group is made up of students in grades 9-12.
The Avon High School Winterguard season starts in November, and continues to the end of March at the MEPA (Mideast Performance Association)
Championships. The group has a weekend drill camp, and practices twice a week throughout the season.
Our Winterguard show designer and instructor is Laurel Florek who brings a great deal of talent and experience to the Avon programs.
As a student Ms. Florek started marching in 1987 with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps in Canton Ohio. The Bluecoats competed in the
finals at the DCI World Championships all three years that Laurel marched there. Additionally, Ms. Florek marched with the Pride of
Cincinnati Winterguard. Pride competed in the WGI World Finals during those two years.
Laurel began her teaching career in 1989. She has worked with numerous high school colorguards, winterguards, and drum corps.
Under her direction, the Avon Fall Colorguard has earned many awards and “Best Auxiliary” Trophies at marching band competitions.
She has also taken on the duty of “Visual Designer” for the Avon “Mighty Eagle” Marching Band since 2005. In addition to the responsibilities
with the Colorguards, Ms. Florek also serves as the Choreographer for the Avon High School Drama Department.
